Summary: Here is our monthly round-up of articles and resources from physicians and financial experts around the web. This month’s picks run the gamut of financial literacy and passive income. However, you’ll find that many of these focus to some degree on the FIRE movement. It helps to stay informed on what other bloggers are saying so you can make informed decisions on your journey to financial freedom!
One Big Happy Life
- This YouTube vlog is a husband/wife effort dedicated to helping working families manage their finances while still enjoying the little things in life. They cover topics from investing to home decorating, and they have tons of helpful tips for organizing your life and your finances. We recently enjoyed their video on the FIRE movement, where they shared their honest thoughts and approach to FIRE. Not only do they break it down, but they also provide a very practical view of the FIRE movement as well.
Zen Productivity
- Ran by Vi Dinh, MD FACEP, this blog focuses on the how of financial independence by cultivating productivity, positive mindset, and personal well-being for physicians and medical students. We love his approach to finances because, as we’ve talked about on this blog, without the right mentality, it’s very hard to reach your financial goals! He’s also compiled a list of Physician Finance bloggers in a handy chart complete with rankings and social media listings. Out of 65, we rank number 14! Whoa!
Xrayvsn
- Started by a practicing radiologist, this blog focuses on financial literacy for physicians, passive income, and FIRE. In this recent article on the blog, the author breaks down different trends in the FIRE movement (Lean vs. Fat, which isn’t the same as Fast vs. Slow but is still an important distinction). The article also suggests reskilling towards high-paying tech jobs in order to achieve FIRE. We can say that we agree with the need to gain “skills.” However, in our case, we recommend people learn how to buy and rent cashflowing rentals. The subject matter isn’t hard but you still have to invest the time to learn the right way to do it.
Wealthy Mom MD
- A friend and fellow physician finance blogger, dermatologist Dr. Bonnie Koo of Wealthy Mom MD focuses on financial literacy for women physicians. However, you can learn something from her no matter who you are. We recommend checking out this article on how debt isn’t always a bad thing. With real estate, you incur debt, so (while it’s a personal choice) we agree that it may not be the best choice to pay off your student loans before starting to invest. Especially when we see 25+% return compared to as low as 1.95% interest on student loans quoted in the article.
Money Checkup Podcast
- This financial podcast, hosted by Anjali Jariwala, CFP, CPA, is a great resource for physicians looking to gain control of their finances. As the spouse of a physician, Anjali specializes in financial planning for healthcare professionals. Many of her podcast episodes and blog posts are physician-oriented. Last week, we had the honor of being guests on her podcast, where we got to share our real estate investing story. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t yet! We also enjoyed this episode with Nisha Mehta MD, which talks about overcoming physician burnout–definitely an important (and relatable) topic!
