In today’s episode, we interview Dr. Russ Richmond, CEO of Laudio. Russ is someone Kenji has known for years and had the opportunity to work closely with him at McKinsey & Company. Kenji was always impressed with his leadership qualities and his ability to effectively manage teams and create followership.
Richmond had to learn to believe in himself, emphasizing this point with the story of how he quit his residency without having another job lined up. He was called a quitter, and familial expectations aside, had to find inner strength to endure. His transition from medicine led him to employ a unique networking tactic–each week, he’d have coffee with two people he didn’t know. During every coffee session, he’d ask for two other people he should have coffee with. His calendar filled up quickly, leading to a new job. This was a simple, effective tool we can all apply in our own lives.
In Richmond’s new job as CEO of Laudio, he shares his keys to team building — giving recognition, positive feedback, and short immediate feedback when team members don’t perform. These same basic principles are the foundation of the tools Laudio provides nurse managers at hospitals to help them manage their team members more effectively.
